How to Prep Your Home for Painters (Room-by-Room Checklist)
Updated October 2025 • A Cut Above Painting Co., CSRA
A little prep goes a long way. This guide shows exactly what helps most, and how to prep your home for painters before the big day so our crew can move fast, protect your space, and leave everything spotless without turning your week upside down.

Prep first, paint second—how we keep your home spotless.
TL;DR (the 60-second version)
- Colors and sheens are chosen with our Project Director 1–2 weeks before your start date.
- The day before, clear surfaces, pull light furniture out 3–4 feet, and make a quick pets/parking/sprinklers plan to prepare your home for our painters.
- On paint day, your Crew Lead reconfirms, we protect & prep, then paint in a sequence that keeps parts of your home usable.
- We finish with a clean up + care tips + walkthrough. If anything needs a touch, we handle it right then.

Your Project Timeline at a Glance
- 1–2 weeks before start: Project Director Walkthrough. Finalize colors & sheens, confirm rooms/exterior areas, note repairs, access, pets, and schedule windows.
- 3–5 days before: You’ll get a short confirmation with a simple prep reminder.
- Day before: Do the quick checklist (below) so we can dive straight in.
- Paint Day: Crew Lead greets you, reconfirms the plan, protects the space, and gets rolling.
The Day-Before Checklist (15–30 minutes tops)
- Clear surfaces: nightstands, counters, mantels, small décor, picture frames.
- Coil cords & move electronics off paint walls.
- Window treatments: if easy, remove and bag hardware together (label room).
- Pets & people plan: choose a comfy spot for pets; tell us any nap/work-from-home schedules.
- Exterior jobs: move cars from work zones, turn off sprinklers, unlock gates, flag any wasp nests or delicate landscaping.
No stress if you can’t get to everything—we handle the heavy lifting, protection, and standard repairs.

What Paint Day Looks Like
- Arrival & hello (Crew Lead)
Quick reconfirm of rooms/areas, colors, sheens, order of operations, and access. If a last-minute question pops up, your Crew Lead syncs with our Project Director—no surprises. - Protection & prep
Floors and furniture covered, masking, repairs, sanding/de-gloss, caulk, primer where needed. - First coats
We sequence work so parts of your home stay usable (e.g., we won’t block the whole kitchen at once). - Second coats & detailing
Crisp lines, uniform sheen, hardware back on, outlets uncovered, spaces tidied as we go. - Clean up, care tips, and walkthrough
We walk with you, handle touches, and leave care guidance (gentle use during cure, wipe-down tips, etc.).
Room-by-Room: What Helps Most (and what we happily handle)
Living rooms & bedrooms
- Helpful from you: remove wall art and small décor; pull light furniture out 3–4 feet.
- We handle: covering/protection, patching nail holes, small repairs, sanding, caulk, primer, clean lines, pulling heavy furniture and covering.
Pro tip: before you pull down a gallery wall, snap a quick photo—rehanging is a breeze.
Kitchen
- Helpful from you: clear counters and magnets; box the coffee station for a day.
- We handle: degreasing high-touch zones, sanding/priming “splash” areas, using wipeable finishes.
Pro tip: plan a simple meal or takeout on paint day; we keep pathways open.
Bathrooms & laundry
- Helpful from you: remove towels/shower curtains; run a fan or dehumidifier(optional).
- We handle: spot-treating mildew, proper ventilation, primers and finishes meant for moisture.
Pro tip: skip hot showers during active painting so humidity doesn’t slow cure.
Hallways & entries
- Helpful from you: move shoes/coats; slide consoles a few feet out.
- We handle: extra-durable finishes (perfect for backpacks and high-traffic zones), crisp corner/trim lines.
Exteriors
- Helpful from you: trim shrubs 12–18″ from siding, move décor/furniture (only if it’s light!), turn off sprinklers, unlock gates.
- We handle: wash, scrape, sand, caulk, prime, and paint—timed to CSRA weather so coatings cure correctly.

What Not to Worry About
- Moving heavy furniture or appliances—we’ve got it.
- Buying drop cloths, tape, or plastic—we bring pro-grade protection.
- Minor wall/trim repairs—standard patch/caulk is included in typical prep.
- Having “perfect” empty rooms—life happens; we stage and work around you.
FAQs
When do we pick colors and sheens?
During your Project Director walkthrough 1–2 weeks before your start date. We’ll look at undertones, light, and durability so you’re confident.
Will it smell?
We use low-odor, low-VOC products for most interiors. Ventilation helps; bathrooms/laundry benefit from fan use.
How clean do walls need to be?
Normal dust is fine—we dust and prep. Kitchens benefit from a quick wipe around stoves; we still degrease before primer.
What if rain is in the forecast for my exterior?
We time work to forecast and “chase the shade.” If weather shifts, we pivot elevation order and product set so your finish cures right.
